Spotting Whales in Australia                Humpback Whales

These magnificent creatures once frequented the waters in and around Hobart.  We spotted a Humpback off Blackmans Bay in January 1997.  It put on quite a performance, slapping its tail in the water and rolling over and over with its fins in the air.

The Humpback on the left is breaching, or leaping out of the water to get its bearings from the land.  The Humpback on the right is holding its tail out of the water to catch the wind.  They do this for fun ... just like us humans when we go wind surfing.
