Many thanks to our dear friend Gavin Johnstone for these photos.

Our Wedding was held at Christ Church of England Longford Tasmania in January 1974.  It was a nice sunny day and a feature of the ceremony was being piped from the church to the reception at Jessen Lodge by a lone Scottish bagpiper, Beth's cousin Graham (photo below). The Officiating Clergy was the Reverend R. J. Barham.  Dallas forgot the rings and drove back 50 km to retrieve them, but still arrived at the church on time. Beth's Uncle Danny had a pub at Longford, but that was many years before.

From left: Jim Nolan (Beth's dad), Thelma Stott (Dallas's mum), Peter Quince (Groomsman - Dallas's cousin), Yvonne Stott (Bridesmaid - Dallas's sister), Dallas Stott (Groom), Beth Stott (Bride), Robert Meyer (Best Man - Dallas's friend), Helen De Groot (Bridesmaid - Beth's friend), Winifred Nolan (Beth's mum), Hilton Stott (Dallas's dad), Kerry Johnstone (Beth's sister).

A lone Scottish bagpiper Beth's cousin Graham Devlin piped us on the short walk from Christ Church to Jessen Lodge for the reception.

We cut the cake and made our getaway in the Love Bug. We still have the Superbug and we still have our marriage.

Christ Church of England at Longford Tasmania                  The Exquisite West Window

Celebrating our 30th Anniversary in January 2004 with Andrew and Mariza

A Short History of Longford and Christ Church of England at Longford

In 1808 many farmers were obliged to quit Norfolk Island when a convict settlement was established there. The Government gave them a free choice and they knew good land when they saw it. Some settled in the fertile Derwent Valley near Hobart Town in Southern Tasmania and founded New Norfolk, while others settled in the Parish of Longford in Northern Tasmania.

On 16 March 1839 a large group of people gathered from all parts of the Parish of Longford to see Sir John Franklin lay the foundation stone of Christ Church of England at Longford. Archdeacon Palmer of Hobart Town assisted. Coincidentally, Dallas was born on the same day in March. Some 135 years after the foundation stone was laid, another large group of people gathered from all parts of Tasmania to celebrate our marriage in the church.

We were married in the light of the beautiful stained glass west window (photo above) which was presented by Charles Reid of Longford. This exquisite window was made in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in England and was designed by William Archer of Cheshunt, who also designed Hutchins School at Hobart. According to general belief, the famous clock was a gift to the Parish of Longford from King George IV of England, however a booklet that was kept in the church porch states that both clock and bell were provided by the Government, and cost 200 pounds. The clock and bell are now missing, but that's another story.
