The deep-water harbour of Hobart is a popular port of call for luxury cruise liners.

Hobart has also hosted the officers and crew on R&R leave of the battleship USS Missouri (2400 crew), and US aircraft carriers Enterprise, Carl Vinson (5500), Abraham Lincoln (5000), John C Stennis (5000), and Kittyhawk (4000).

The icebreaker Aurora Australis is based in Hobart too, the main purpose being to conduct research and to resupply Australia's Antarctic bases.  The CSIRO Marine Laboratories run the Southern Surveyor from here for research also.

Bass Strait Ferries - Spirit of Tasmania and DevilCat

 

     

The ferry Spirit of Tasmania above crosses Bass Strait between Melbourne in Victoria and Devonport in Tasmania.

The other ferry called the DevilCat travels between Port Welshpool in Victoria and George Town in Tasmania.
