Pictured at far left is my father Clifford James (Jim) NOLAN playing for the R.& S.L.A. Tasmanian Bowls Association at the 1998/99 National Championships for Outdoor Bowls.

My Great Grandparents, Patrick and Margaret NOLAN arrived in Van Diemens Land on the 16 September 1854.   They sailed out on the ship "Maitland".

Patrick NOLAN was 21 years of age, a Roman Catholic, was from the county of Wexford, Ireland.   He could not read or write and his profession was noted as a labourer.   Patrick died on 8th December 1893, from Pleurisy and Heart Disease at the age of 58 years.  He was buried near Latrobe on the North West Coast.  At this stage he was a farmer at Northdown, Tasmania.

Margaret (TOOLE) NOLAN was 18 years of age, a Roman Catholic, and was from the county of Wicklow, Ireland.  Margaret could not read or write and her profession was noted as a milk and wash lady.  Margaret died on the 29th August, 1899 at the age of 59 years of Heart Disease.

The family story says that Margaret was a gypsy and that the couple had to come to VDL as the marriage was not approved by their parents.   They first settled at New Norfolk, where their first child, Patrick Arthur, was born.   Patrick Arthur was also said to have been born on the "Maitland", but as the records show he was born in Tasmania.  Click on NOLAN Family for our family tree.
