YOUNG AUSTRALIAN OF THE YEAR AWARDS 2002

In December 2001 I received a Certificate for Fourth Place in the Career Achievement category of the Tasmanian Awards for Young Australian of the Year 2002. My family nominated me but kept it a secret so it was a big surprise when I found out that I was a semi finalist. There were over 100 nominations received in Tasmania and the presentations were held at the Wrest Point Hotel Casino in Hobart. My Certificate was presented by the Honourable Douglas Parkinson, Deputy Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council. The Tasmanian state winner for Career Achievement in 2002 was Chelsea Newman who was Director of the Wynyard Child Care Centre at age 23.

SPORT

I play and coach netball and go for a run each morning to keep fit. Have rowed with the Mersey Rowing Club in Devonport Tasmania and went in a triathlon and a fun run. Represented Tasmania in Athletics at the 1988 Pan Pacific Schools Games in Sydney and in Netball.

Netball Australia

When I moved to Devonport Tasmania in 2001 I played State League Netball for Devon (see photo above). State League is the highest Netball League in Tasmania. I now live in Geelong Victoria and played in the local netball teams there.

I started playing netball at Kingston Tasmania which is near the capital city Hobart. I also played in State League Netball with the Waratah Excel team after our major sponsors I was captain of the 1999 Hyundai Excel team, for which I am very honoured. The average age was 20 to 21 years.

I represented Tasmania in Under 21 Netball at the 1996 Australian Championships in Perth, in AYC Netball at the 1995 National Championships in Adelaide, and in Under 17 Netball at the 1992 Australian Championships in Sydney.

We all have a lot of fun together and netball is a sport I really enjoy. Oh and I can't forget walking my Alaskan Malamute  Chrissy (sorry puppy!). The photo below was taken on Mt Wellington Hobart.

I come from a very sports-orientated family. Grandfather Stott played cricket and now plays indoor bowls. Grandfather Nolan played football and cricket and now plays outdoor bowls. My mother played hockey, volleyball, basketball and squash. My father played volleyball and squash and went bushwalking and my brother did athletics, volleyball and mixed netball. And cousin Darrel Baldock (from Tasmania) captained the Saint Kilda Australian Rules Football team to their only premiership in 1966 and was recently named Captain of the Saints' Team of the Century.

MY AFRICAN SAFARI

Photos of me skydiving above the desert and standing on top of the world's oldest sand dunes.

In December 2000 I went on an awesome Contiki African Safari for a month. We went tandem skydiving, quad-biking in the sand dunes, and white water rafting and canoeing on the Zambezi River, where we were attacked by a very nervous hippopotamus.

This is my favourite photo of me. I have not really changed much over the years. I would have been about 4 years old here. I remember this photo being taken at school in George Town Tasmania.

I WAS NAMED AFTER FREYJA THE NORSE GODDESS OF LOVE AND FERTILITY

Ironically the Stott surname is similar to present-day Scandanavian surnames and Stott ancestors have been traced back to the Vikings who invaded Scotland centuries ago. My paternal ancestors came from Lancashire near the border of Scotland and England. The scottish Stott clan were despised by the English gentry and fought the English alongside Sir William Wallace and Robert Bruce King of Scotland. Mel Gibson portrayed Wallace in "Braveheart" but in fact Braveheart was Robert Bruce. Sir William Wallace was hung, drawn and quartered by King Edward I (Longshanks) of England to deter the Scottish rebels.

Freyja is the most important goddess in Norse Mythology. She's the beautiful Norse Goddess of love and fertility. Friday was named after her. Her father was Njordur in Noatun, god of the sea. Her mother was Skadi in Thrymsheimur, daughter of the giant Thjassi. Freyja's brother is Freyr, god of fertility.

Freyja's husband was Odur, who has left her a long time ago and she sometimes cries tears of gold because she misses him. She used to travel among strange nations to look for him and she called herself different names, like Mardoell, Hoern, Gefn and Syr, while travelling. Freyja has only one daughter, Hnoss, with Odur.

Freyja lives in Folkvangur in Asgard. Her house, Sessrumnir, is big and beautiful. She has a precious necklace called Brisingamen and a wagon which is pulled by two cats. She is also in possession of a falcon-like disguise, which she once lent to Loki Laufeyjarson when he needed to get to Joetunheimar.

FREYR ... BROTHER OF FREYJA

Freyr is the son of Njordur and Freyja's brother. He is god of fertility and also god of love. His name means 'master', 'lord', 'the supreme' and is related to an old slavonic word meaning 'the first'.

Freyr is one of the best Aesir group. Snorri describes him as handsome, powerful and kind. He controls the rain and the sunshine and thus the fertility of the earth. One can also pray to Freyr for a good future, peace and prosperity.

Freyr was a very popular pagan god in Sweden and the Swedish kings even counted Freyr as one of their ancestors. In Iceland Freyr came next to Thor in popularity. In Sweden a lot of places bear Freyr's name but in Iceland you can only find two, i.e. Freysnes and Freysholar. In Reykjavik there's a street called Alfheimar, which was the name of Freyr's dwellings.

In Alfheimar he lived with his wife, Gerdur Gymisdottir. He saw her first when he once sat down on Odinn's throne, Hlidskjalf. As he sat there he looked north, saw Gerdur and fell so much in love with her that he couldn't speak or eat or sleep. Freyr's best man, Skirnir, went to Joetunheimar where Gerdur lived and brought her to Freyr.

As a reward for this Now Freyr has no sword and because of that he will die at Ragnarok, when the world comes to an end.
