Tassie Devils

devil2.jpg (15803 bytes)devil1.jpg (6578 bytes)Inspired by the tenacity of the native Tasmanian Devil at left, a dual-hull vessel like the one at right, designed and built by Incat in Hobart, holds the Trans-Atlantic speed record for passenger ships. The Devil Cat shown below, was launched in November 1998.  It is 96 metres long, weighs 800 tonnes, travels at 70 km/h (44 mph) fully loaded, and carries 600 people plus cars and trucks. Devil Cat builder Incat Australia now has plans for a 120 metre catamaran fast ferry.

The lncat 050 pictured above wearing the distinctive Devil Cat livery is the first of Incat's innovative 96 metre class. With an impressive 800 tonne deadweight capacity and the ability to carry a highway mix of semi-trailers, trucks, vans, coaches and cars, the new 96m class offers the ultimate in market and seasonal flexibility.


Devil Cat was launched on 7 November 1998 from the Hobart, Tasmania shipyard of Incat, the market leader in the development and construction of high speed vehicle / passenger carrying ferries. A progression and extension of the successful Incat 74, 78, 81, 86 and 91 metre wave piercers, built from marine grade aluminium to the requirements of the Det Norske Veritas High Speed Light Craft Rules and to comply with the IMO High Speed Craft Code.

                                           supplying 415V, 50 Hz. 3 phase.

Water Jets                            Four Lips 150 D waterjets configured for steering and reverse.

CCTV                                 CCTV cameras to cover engine room (2 cameras each), ante rooms (1 camera each),

                                            vehicle spaces (5 cameras) and jet rooms (1 camera each).

                                            External (one camera each side), four monitors in the wheelhouse.
