Its hard to be humble when you are an Alaskan Malamute

All domestic dogs are descended from wolves. Alaskan Malamutes even look like wolves.

Turn up your speakers and refresh this page to hear the howl of a wolf in the wild.

I'm Chrissy the purebred female Alaskan Malamute (Mal for short). My mother called Kodie came from Pipers River in Tasmania and my father came from Melbourne. One of my grandparents came from the USA.  I was born in Tasmania just after Christmas 1994 - hence my name is Chrissy. Click on Wolf Howl if you cant hear it now.

I am a typical intelligent and friendly Malamute, who loves playing with people and other dogs in the snow and on the beach.  I once dug a hole under the back fence and let the next door neighbour's dog in to play with me - boy was that fun!!!   I have a cheeky little feathery friend called Wilbur the Galah who pulls my tail hairs when I am not looking, so I nip her tail feathers to get even. I don't like swimming, but this photo shows me having a bath, which I really enjoy.

My Recommendations on Dog Food

Check out these web sites:    The Dog Food Book       Iams Company - Eukanuba Pellets

For information about dog food quality click on: What's The Best Dog Food For Your Money?

For a cheap Aussie meal, try a mixture of Bonnie dried dog food and Easymeat from the Animal Tuckerbox.   They make up the Easymeat, which has chicken, beef and lamb off-cuts, with cereals, rice, vegetables, garlic, calcium, and other stuff.

I love raw eggs and scraps from the table too, especially cooked vegetables like potatoes, peas, carrots, cauliflower and pumpkin.  I expect a place at the table with the humans, so I sit by the table and put on the hungry look.  In fact I eat almost anything, and relish bones that have been buried for a while, with some rotting meat on them.

When I was a pup, I was fed on meat bought in bulk from the butcher and cut up and cooked with vegetables into a stew, as well as bones to chew on.  Tinned dog food gave me wind and diarrhoea (sorry PAL), so I changed to Eukanuba Natural Chicken pellets which have chicken, chicken meal, ground corn, rice flower, chicken fat, dried beet pulp, chicken digest, dried whole egg, fish oil, brewer's dried yeast, monosodium phosphate and linseed.  These were recommended by my vet.

I also tried Eukanuba Natural Lamb and Rice pellets with lamb, rice flower, ground corn, fishmeal, grain sorghum, dried egg product, dried beet pulp, animal fat, brewer's dried yeast, dicalcium phosphate, potassium chloride, chicken digest, choline chloride, salt, dl-methionine, ferrous sulphate, zinc oxide, vitamin E supplement, ascorbic acid, copper sulphate, manganese sulphate, manganous oxide, biotin, lecithin, rosemary extract, vitamin A acetate, calcium pantothenate, vitamin B12 supplement, thiamine mononitrate, niacin, riboflavin supplement, inositol, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), potassium iodide, vitamin D3 supplement, sodium selenite, folic acid and cobalt carbonate.  Pardon the pun, but thats a mouthful.

My favourite now is premium quality Eukanuba Adult Maintenance for adult dogs, which contains chicken by-product meal, ground corn, rice flour, chicken, chicken fat, dried beet pulp, chicken digest, dried egg product, fish oil, brewers dried yeast, monosodium phosphate, flax, potassium chloride, choline chloride, sodium chloride, dl-methionine, vitamin E supplement, ascorbic acid, copper sulphate, antioxidant, zinc oxide, ferrous sulphate, manganese sulphate, manganese oxide, biotin, vitamin A acetate, calcium pantothenate, vitamin B12 supplement, niacin, thiamine mononitrate, ribiflavin supplement, inositil, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin D3 supplement, potassium iodide, folic acid and cobalt carbonate.

I only need two 120g scoops (large cup) of premium quality pellets daily.  Being a girl I have to watch my figure, so I like to keep my weight down to about 40 kg.  A 15 kg pack of pellets costs about $80 Australian and lasts me about two months.  Because the pellets are almost totally absorbed in my gut, my poos are small and firm, which makes them easy to clean up.

Premium quality pellets are more nutritious than economy quality pellets, but super-premium pellets are the best.  Independent tests have shown that you need five times the weight of economy pellets as super-premium pellets, for the same nutritional value, thus super-premium pellets are cheaper by the calorie and cheaper to buy - in other words you don't need as much.

Bloat

Be careful about bloat with dry food.   Bloat is a condition that affects all large, deep chested breeds. It is a potentially life-threatening condition which usually affects dogs in the prime of life. Basically, the dog's stomach will swell from gas, fluid, or both (this is acute gastric dilation). Once distended, the stomach may twist abruptly on its long axis. If it does twist, but the twist is less than 180 degrees, it is called a torsion. If greater than 180 degrees, it is called a volvulus. Therefore, the term bloat can refer to any of these three conditions (acute gastric distortion, torsion, or volvulus). Acute gastric dilation is not serious, and may clear up itself in a few minutes. Torsion or volvulus are life threatening and immediate veterinary attention is required. The chance for recurrence is around fifteen percent. The cause of bloat is unknown.

Also, refer to the Bloat article posted to MALAMUTE-L Digest - 9 May 1997 to 10 May 1997 by Mick & Karyn Colman.

A friend told me the last Australian Husky to die in Antarctica was called Brendan after Saint Brendan the adventurous Irish Monk  Brendan was fine when he ate his evening meal, but was dead the next morning with a twisted gut, which is what happens with dog bloat.  They used to feed the dogs in Antarctica on frozen Pemmican blocks, which had a strong fishy/vegemite/dogfood smell, and they lived on it for generations, so it must have been pretty nutritious.  Dogs are now banned from Antarctica because they are not an indigenous species there - but then neither are humans!!!
